It doesn’t matter which genre, but you should never base your entire playing style off outdated musicians. While it may be extremely valuable to study their compositions, music evolves and their compositions are do not encompass all the modern possibilities.
Additionally, a good musicians should never just study a single style or genre. The exploration of different genres is necessary to find one’s sound and to create innovative music. Now genres are more fluid than ever, and conforming to a particular style is a mistake.
Studying the styles of famous musicians is very important, but one must never forget that they are not the famous musician. Everyone’s style is unique, do not limit yourself by parroting your favorite artist. I love to listen the styles of some of my favorite guitarists, but the music I like to play is very different and unique.
Finding a unique sound is very different and takes a lot of time and reflection, but I believe it to be worth it. Trying to be your idol, who you are not, is a waste of time and puts you into a box. I can’t tell you how to be creative and find your style, it only comes from effort on your part. Don’t limit your creativity by following others, this also applies to the constructions of music theory, which I may get to later.
