Ultra Violent by Joel Lindfors
This song is very interesting in that it is audibly minimalist. I am a fan of a lot of songs that are musically minimalist; I think making such a song can more difficult than something more musically complex. This song is impressive in the way it incorporates the main guitar melody throughout the entire song, but uses peripherals to make the song dynamic and engaging.
This song is from the 70-90s Japanese Jazz Fusion era. These song may not seem too complex, and compared to some, they aren’t, but they use deceptively difficult musical techniques and chords to achieve their sound. Towards the late 90s a lot of these musicians had to move to composing songs for video games and movies, as now being a session musician unfortunately does pay enough, but now you can still hear their musical complexity in a lot of soundtracks.
The producer side of me can appreciate this song. While the melodies aren’t that complex or unpredictable, this synth-pop/funk song’s production goes perfectly unnoticed, which is the goal for a lot of producers. The vocal effects make, no offense, generic vocals sound more interesting while staying natural enough to not become uncanny. The synth and bass blend together to create a cohesive sound when not being payed attention to, but can be isolated by the listener to be enjoyed fully.
