Guitar Sbrego by Danielle Gottardo
This song an incredible mix of Steve Vai like fluidity and modern tapping and fingerstyle techniques. A common critique I hear regarding virtuosic guitar players is that they are more concerned with using difficult techniques than with making an actually enjoyable song, but this song defies this critique. In fact, the fast paced, shred parts are my favorite, and the slower, less technical parts aren’t as engaging.
Apeirophobia by Animals As Leaders
I really love the progressive nylon sound, and this is no exception. To end off an incredible album, this song slows down in tempo, but not in intensity. While it may not be as loud or rhythmically jarring as some of the other tracks on this album, it makes up in the claustrophobic (or apeirophobic) effect it causes. There is something beautifully unsettling about this piece.
Continuing with the unsettling songs, Ilk, and the visualizer that goes with it, is a very interesting production. It starts off with distorted vocals, which are often overused, but eventually strays away from them. The guitar that comes towards the end surpasses the vocals in this manner, but the impact that the guitar has would not be as momentous without the prior vocals. While I think that distorted vocals can be somewhat of a cheap shot, I think they fit perfectly into this piece.
